About the Department
Established in 1971, the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care, located within the School of Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center, serves the Medical School as the academic home of the social, behavioral, and public health sciences. The department and its
four divisions consist of 15 full time faculty, over 150 adjunct faculty with clinical or teaching appointments, and
20 support staff.
The mission of the Department is to provide education, research and service, especially in relation to epidemiology, biostatistics, health services, health social sciences, medical humanities, health law, ethics and history of medicine. The Department’s teaching activities and research programs have four interrelated goals:
- Provide educational opportunities for Connecticut residents pursuing careers in public health, medicine and dental medicine;
- Advance knowledge through epidemiological, clinical, ethical, legal, behavioral, and social research;
- Develop and evaluate innovative health-care services and prevention programs; and
- Assist health care and public health professionals improve their effectiveness through consultation and continuing education programs.
Community Medicine & Health Care's offices are located at the Exchange office complex. The Exchange, a unique 3 story, wood post and beam structure consisting of four interconnected office buildings is situated in a wooded northeast section of Farmington along Farmington Avenue (Route 4) approximately one mile from the Route 4 exit of Interstate 84 and directly across the street from the University of Connecticut Health Center campus and John Dempsey Hospital. The Department's main office, the majority of its Divisions, and most faculty and staff offices are located in Building Four, Suite 260. The physical infrastructure of the Department consists of 12,798 square feet of offices and open space. The suite includes 19 faculty offices, as well as office and open floor plan space for research assistants and administrative staff. Space is also allocated for document storage, a computer laboratory, a shared office for postdoctoral fellows, as well as significant amounts of space designated to store personnel, project and grant files. Additionally, the Department encompasses a large classroom or conference room that can be used for seminars, departmental meetings and other functions, two smaller conference rooms, and a kitchen. These facilities are available to other Departments by reservation.
Conference and Meeting Rooms
Within the Department's main suite are two conference rooms and one smaller meeting room which are used by department members for meetings and appointments. All conference and meeting rooms are equipped with wired data ports to the Health Center's computer network. The large conference includes audiovisual equipment
, a networked desktop computer and projector plus conference phone. The smaller conference room seats 12 and is equipped with a
networked laptop, projector and telephone connection to facilitate conference calls. The meeting room accommodates 4-6 people and is available on a first-come, first served basis. Department members can reserve the two conference rooms electronically through Microsoft® Outlook's resource scheduling capabilities.
Computer Laboratory
The Department of Community Medicine and Health Care
maintains a computer laboratory consisting of 4 PC and one
Mac computer in its offices at the Exchange. The computers
are outfitted with the latest statistical and research
software including SPSS and SAS as well as the Microsoft
Office suite of programs. Scanners, color printers, and
Internet access are also available for research and
educational activities. The computer lab may be used by
departmental faculty and staff and public health students.
Users must have a Health Center login to access the UCHC computer network. The lab is open during regular business hours, 8:30 AM - 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
